Each year, the legendary Great Migration unfolds here, as millions of wildebeests and zebras traverse the endless plains. With more than 70 species of large mammals and over 500 types of birds, the Serengeti remains a dream destination for wildlife lovers.
Alongside the neighboring Ngorongoro Conservation Area and the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro, Serengeti National Park proudly holds its place on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The Incredible Animals of Ngorongoro Serengeti
Among the most commonly seen animals in the Serengeti are elephants, lions, buffaloes, zebras, hippos, and giraffes. Rarer sightings include rhinos, cheetahs, and leopards, making each encounter even more special.
The Serengeti is renowned for its incredible biodiversity, home to more than seventy species of large mammals. It stands as one of Africa’s top destinations for witnessing iconic wildlife, with animal populations often exceeding those found in other major parks. It’s also one of the few places where you can still encounter the critically endangered Eastern black rhinoceros.
Given the vastness of the Serengeti, animals are constantly on the move, and it’s not unusual to go 30 minutes or more without spotting major wildlife. However, skilled safari guides stay connected via radio, sharing real-time sightings to ensure you get the most out of your safari adventure.
the Great Migration

The best time to experience the Great Wildebeest Migration in East Africa depends largely on where along the route you choose to witness it. Here’s a breakdown of what you can expect throughout the year:
- January to March (Calving Season) – Southern Serengeti, Tanzania: During these months, the herds gather across the southern plains of the Serengeti to give birth. It’s an incredible time to observe thousands of newborn calves and the heightened predator activity, as lions, cheetahs, and hyenas take advantage of the vulnerable young.
- April to June (Grumeti River Crossing) – Central to Western Serengeti: The migration moves northwest, with wildebeests and zebras crossing the Grumeti River. This stage offers exciting river crossings and the ever-present danger of predators lurking nearby.
- July to October (Mara River Crossing) – Northern Serengeti and Masai Mara, Kenya: The most dramatic and famous phase occurs when the herds tackle the treacherous Mara River, facing strong currents and waiting crocodiles. This spectacle, paired with intense predator action, draws visitors from around the world.
- November to December (Return to Serengeti) – Back to Serengeti: As the cycle nears completion, the herds head south, returning to the Serengeti just in time for the next calving season.
- While the July to October Mara River crossings are considered the ultimate highlight, each stage of the migration offers its own unforgettable experiences.
